Field Trip to Great Falls Virginia

Everyone is invited to a field trip to Great Falls Virginia (https://www.nps.gov/grfa/index.htm) on Saturday, October 21st at 4:45 pm to photograph the falls in late day light.

Great Falls is where the Potomac River flows over a series of steep rocks on its way through Mather Gorge. This area of the Potomac River actually consists of many separate falls that can be photographed all in one photo or, using a telephoto lens, as individual falls. Although you can photograph the falls from both the Virginia and Maryland side, and both can result in wonderful photos, this field trip will be from the Virginia side

There are three overlooks where you can photograph but the best of the three (in my opinion!) is the first one, closest to the parking area and visitor center. So for this trip, we’ll plan on photographing from that overlook. But, the other two are close so if you are interested in photographing from one of those overlooks, you can feel free to explore there as well.

Let’s meet at the visitor’s center at 4:45 and from there we can walk the short distance to the first overlook.

Please contact Cathrine Sasek (chloe.hayley@gmail.com; 301-540-7558), if you plan to attend.

Recommended equipment:

Camera body
Lenses of multiple lengths: wide angle-telephoto
Polarizer
Tripod
Extra battery
Snacks

Directions:

The directions to Great Falls can be found at:

Fees

A Great Falls Park Vehicle Permit is $10. This will allow you to enter the park on three consecutive days.

Carpooling

If possible, lets try to carpool. Note that the $10 fee admits all passengers in a vehicle, so if we carpool, we can save on the cost of the entrance fee. Also, anyone who is 62 or older can purchase a lifetime pass for $10.
